To achieve a crisply ironed garment, you need to use an ironing board. Almost 6 million ironing boards are purchased each year, according to Seymour Housewares Corporation.

Ironing has a long history. Originally, the “ironing board” was a flat board laid on a table or across two chairs. The clothing was laid on the board and pressed with a hot rock, or, later, a heavy cast iron implement heated in a fireplace or stove. By the 19th century, women in Europe and America were using wooden “ironing tables” with fold-down wooden legs.

Household irons have evolved from heavyweight chunks of metal to today’s lightweight plastic, steam-emitting, automatic shut-off models. But the ironing board hasn’t changed much, although there are several types.

Free–Standing Ironing Board

The free-standing ironing board made of wood is the earliest type. These fold-up ironing boards are now made with lightweight aluminum and feature cord guides and holders for steam irons. Some upper-end models have metal hanging racks at one end to hold freshly ironed clothes.

Built-in Board
Ironing boards built into a wall recess were popular in the early 1940s and are in demand again today. They can be stored out of sight in an attractive cabinet until needed and then folded down from the wall.

These wall-mounted ironing boards are particularly convenient in small houses or apartments, where space is limited. They can even be installed in walk-in closets.

Many people prefer wall-mounted ironing boards, even in larger houses, because they are so convenient. They take only a few seconds to set up and put away. Some can even be swiveled out at an angle into the most convenient position.
Ironing Centers

Ironing centers are self-contained built-ins with compartments for storage of the iron, spray starch and other garment care items, such as a sewing kit. The large cabinet, which may be quite elaborate, is built into the wall and contains drawers, shelves and a swing-out ironing board.

Mini Ironing Boards

Mini ironing boards, about 3 feet long, are made to put on a table or dresser. Many college students purchase mini ironing boards to use in a dorm or small apartment. They are also sometimes used in hotels or motels. Since they’re small and don’t have legs, they are easy to store in a small space.

Door-Mounted Ironing Board

Another kind of ironing board is mounted on a door. It may hook over the top of the door, enabling it to be easily lifted off and moved, or it may be screwed into the top of the door. It flips down from the door when you want to use it. This option is a good space saver in apartments and small homes. It’s easy to keep out of sight on the back of a bedroom or laundry room door.

Installing Ironing board cabinet

Building a foldup ironing cabinet saves space in a tight location where you need access to an ironing board. Ironing board cabinets are easy to build, and keep the board in a mounted location at all times. The boards are often much smaller than regular ironing boards, but they’re just as effective.

step by step instructions

Step 1
Set the two cabinet sides parallel to one another. Position the cabinet tops above the sides.

Step 2
Connect the cabinet sides and cabinet tops together using the corner brackets. Place the brackets about 1 inch inside the corner of the cabinet. Screw them in with the bracket screws.

Step 3
Lay the cabinet door over the new structure. Connect the door by screwing it in with the door hinges.

Step 4
Measure the area you want to hang this cabinet. Using a stud finder, locate a stud that you will use to drill the cabinet into.

Step 5
Measure approximately 36 inches from the ground up, and make a small mark on the wall.

Step 6
Line up the bottom of the cabinet with the mark on the wall. Hang the cabinet on the wall using your drill and cabinet-mounting screws.

Step 7
Drill two hinges onto the bottom of the ironing board.

Step 8
Drill the hinges into the back end of the cabinet. The ironing board will be laying down flat, and may sag downwards.

Step 9
Screw in a hinge on the bottom side of the ironing board, toward the front of the board (away from the wall side).

Step 10
Drill an expandable rod into the hinge on the bottom of the board. The rod should have a rubber bottom and expand out at least 38 inches. It should be no longer than 32 inches. When you connect the expandable rod to the bottom of the board, make sure the rubber stopper is on the bottom.

Step 11
Expand the rod out to the bottom of the floor to give the board extra support

Ironing is a very time consuming process, made more frustrating by the fact that no sooner have you ironed an item of clothing, you will end up wearing it, washing it and putting it back in the pile of clean clothes to be ironed.

There are a number of things that you can use to improve the ironing experience, particularly to speed up the time it takes to properly iron your clothes. In this respect, not all ironing board covers are as good as each other and selecting the right ironing board cover can save you time on your laundry chores, week after week.

So what types of ironing board covers are available and which should you choose?

Many decisions will probably revolve around the look and the pattern of the cover and whilst this is a valid selection criteria (you will be looking at it for many hours in the months to come) and maybe more important if you do not have room to store your ironing board out of sight, the pattern is not going to impact on the efficiency of the ironing board.

The cost should not really be a consideration either, as the most expensive cover is only slightly more than a more basic cover. What you do need to ensure is that the cover you choose will properly fit. If you think that all ironing boards are about the same size you would be surprised as they come in different lengths and different widths. Although most covers will be adjustable with a draw string to pull the cover tight around the ironing board, or with an elasticated edge to hold the cover in place, if your cover is too small it will not fit at all and if it is too large there may be so much fabric left over that you can not hold the surface tight, resulting in ridges and ruffles on the ironing surface which is not the ideal situation to create crease free clothes.

As with many consumer items, technology now plays a part in how the fabric is developed and manufactured. The simplest cover you can get will be a cotton only cover, but silicon covers are also now produced which help reflect the heat from the iron back into the clothes, creating an easier ironing surface. In addition to the outer material, many ironing board covers also come with foam backing which provide a smoother surface to iron on. The smoother the surface, the easier and quicker it should be to iron your clothes and the better the end result.

Though many clothes are made from wrinkle-resistant materials, there will always be time when you really need to run an iron over something. You may have an important job interview or appointment for which you want to look your best. Or maybe you want to put out linen napkins for special guests. That’s when a tabletop ironing board can come in handy.

Step by step instructions :

Step 1
Store your board and iron together, in an out-of-the-way closet. Usually when you need the quick swipe of an iron, you do not have extra time to hunt for everything. One of the advantages of a tabletop version is that they are small and store easily.

Step 2
Set the board on top of a surface that is even and flat. Put down a towel underneath the board to keep the surface safe from scratches, or burns if you accidentally set the iron down on the tabletop.

Step 3
Use the tabletop ironing board for smaller items such as shirts, small linens, shorts and children’s clothing. It’s less useful for larger items, such as dresses, sheets or long pants.

Step 4
Sit or stand well above the board so you can manipulate the iron properly. It’s easy to burn yourself if you try to reach up from a sitting position to run the iron. Situate yourself so you look down at the board, not up to it.

By pro’s I mean, someone who irons a lot, maybe even everyday. Due to the advanced design and technology incorporated into this board, it really is stable and durable enough to be used in a commercial environment.

Rowenta is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of steam irons, it only stands to reason that they would add ironing boards to their product line. But not just your standard iron board, the Rowenta Professional Ironing Board has 3 major features that you should know about.

Feature #1 – Reinforced Stability!

With the Professional Ironing Board, Rowenta has taken the stability of the iron board a step further. They have reinforced the leg structure with a third supporting leg. This will give you the added stability to iron those large items that are so awkward and be able to support the heavier items we sometimes have to iron.

The leg structure is designed in the shape of a T. The feet are wider than the standard iron board and are arched for even more stability. The ends of the feet are capped with non-slip grips so don’t have to worry about it moving around.

Feature #2 – Ironing Surface Size!

Having a larger ironing surface is great for any ironing project. The ironing surface of the Rowenta Professional Ironing Board measures 18″ x 49″, which is considerably larger than a standard board. This comes in handy when ironing large items as well as your everyday ironing.

Another size feature is the height adjustment. You can adjust up to 39″ which really helps keep your back straight instead of having to bend forward to iron. If you are a tall person, this is perfect for you.

Feature #3 – Iron Rest and Laundry Rack!

You probably never considered an iron rest when shopping for an ironing board. I have to admit, it is one of my favorite features. Safety is the number one reason I like it. I don’t have to worry about the iron getting knocked off the board like I did when it was standing upright. The iron actually lays on the iron rest at a slight angle which is also great for the wrist. It eliminates the constant up and down motion
of the wrist, which can cause your wrist to ache.

By using the iron rest, you have also freed up the largest part of ironing surface at the end of your iron board. This gives you much more ironing surface.

The Rowenta Professional Ironing Board also comes with a laundry rack which is located under the board attached to the leg structure.
